Musuems

The world longest castle is home to three museums: The House of Photography, the Town Museum and the State Collection.

Not only the history that is present everywhere in the form of the world's longest castle or the listed old town is capitalized in Burghausen, contemporary art also has a high priority in the Salzach city. Whether in historical walls or in public places, art is everywhere in Burghausen.

House of Photography

Right at the entrance to the world’s longest castle complex there is a very special kind of museum. The photography museum, founded in 1983, gives a detailed  insight into that most fascinating of mediums.

Aesthetic highlights are the gallery of contemporary photography and regular special exhibitions of photographic art. Also to be seen is 170 years of photographic history with historic images of the  town and a collection of over 500 cameras.

Town Museum

The Burghausen Town Museum is located in the main castle of the world’s longest castle. After the 2012 Bavarian-Upper Austrian State Exhibition, the permanent exhibition in the Town Museum was re-designed from scratch.

See history brought to life across a total area of 900 m2 through a variety of hands-on exhibits and audio stations. Experience courtly culture on the ground floor and learn all about the town’s history on the second floor.

Once the other areas, the “art city Burghausen” and the Salzach-Wöhrsee nature area, are set up, in a few years’ time the Town Museum will be able to present a total of four subject areas over an area of 1,400 m2.

State Collection

Bavarian paintings from the late Middle Ages and court art from 1600 –  panoramic battle scenes on canvas.

56 paintings presented over two floors of the main castle – from late medieval altar pieces to artworks and paintings from the early 17th century. There is also a breathtaking view from the platform on the roof.
