Jazz in Burghausen

Burghausen is not only the city with the world's longest castle. Burghausen is also a jazz city: In addition to the international jazz week, there are other highlights such as Jazz am Bichl or the Jazzherbst.

Burghausen has been synonymous with jazz since 1970: During the International Jazz Week, for one week in March, the Salzach city becomes the Mecca of international jazz greats! In addition to the big main concerts in the old and new town, there is an extra program, such as the jazz night in the bars in the old town or a jazz morning pint. The round of Burghauser jazz seasons then swings happily on, e.g. B. with the Summer Jazz Night. Or from mid-July at Jazz am Bichl: every Thursday until the beginning of September there is open-air jazz in a wide variety of variations on the stage at Bichl in the middle of the Grüben.

Another Burghauser jazz extra is the "Jazz Academy", which takes place several times a year in the Mautnerschloss: the theory and practice of jazz music are academically deepened here.

The "Street of Fame" in the Grüben is an internationally unique homage from the Burghausers to legendary jazz artists: 43 bronze plates embedded in the promenade bear the names, signatures and life dates of legendary jazz musicians who have already entered the international Burghausen Jazz Week Had guest performance. "Way down South" or how jazz created a unique attitude towards life in Burghausen from 1970 to today: you can find out in an entertaining jazz stroll on an interactive, GPS-guided tour.

Raitenhaslach abbey market

The spirit of Hildegard of Bingen permeates this special two-day market – a  tranquil event in the idyll of the former Cistercian abbey at Raitenhaslach.
In early summer, monks and nuns from around two dozen monasteries and  convents in four countries come to Raitenhaslach Abbey’s Prelate Garden and  bring their delicious home-made delicacies. The culinary aromas mingle with the smells of flowers and herbs from monastery nurseries whose plants beautify the Abbey Garden.

Great historic castle festival

The highlight every year on the 2nd weekend in July is the historic castle festival:
Jesters, minstrels, craftsmen – and, of course, the nobility. For three days, on every second weekend in July, mediaeval life returns to the world’s longest castle. The year is 1516 – and Wilhelm IV, Duke of Bavaria, is honouring Burghausen with his presence.

The cultural program

The Summer of Music offers a lavish concert and drama program at a high level, for almost every taste: starting with the master concerts with international classical virtuosos in the magnificent baroque auditorium of the Kurfürst-Maximilian Gymnasium, to the drama Burghausen with top-class German theaters and Burghausen as a stage for the European weeks. The city's cultural office offers children's and youth theater every season. There is also an incredibly wide range of events for other privately organized musicians, cabaret, actors and painters in and around the city.

The Christmas time in Burghausen

There is a lot to do in Burghausen in the run-up to Christmas. On the special backdrops of the city there are original Christmas markets and atmospheric things around them: For example at the “Liachterlweg" at the lake Wöhrsee, where 300 candles are distributed in wooden lanterns around the lake. Or at "Advent in the Grüben": In the unique ambience of the medieval promenade and craft mile Grüben with a view of the world's longest castle, over 25 regional suppliers present their handicrafts and delicacies. And of course at the castle Christmas: "Open the door, the gate opens wide" is the motto of the world's longest castle every year at the castle Christmas on the 3rd weekend in Advent.
