Christmas markets in Burghausen

In the run-up to Christmas, Burghausen and Raitenhaslach have plenty to offer. There are original Christmas markets around the picturesque town.

Candle trail by the lake Wöhrsee

1st Advent weekend

At Christmastime, Lake Wöhrsee is transformed into an atmospherically lit natural setting. 300 lights in wooden lanterns around the lake create a heavenly atmosphere at the foot of the world's longest castle. There is lots for old and young alike to discover at various Christmas-themed stations: Listen intently to a Christmas tale, find a manger, follow the sound of the Christmas bells or bathe in the warm glow of the candlelight. Festive sounds fill the air. An enchanting winter's walk around Lake Wöhrsee is rounded off on the lawn of the Wöhrsee bathing lake with hot drinks and nibbles.

The candle trail starts at 4:30 p.m. Meet by the entrance to the Wöhrsee bathing lake.

Advent in the Grüben

1st & 2nd Advent weekend

In the run-up to Christmas, the old town shows its romantic side. As the first snowflakes float down from the softly lit walls of the main castle between the colourful facades of the Grüben, the mile from the small Bichl square to the Mautner castle is transformed into the venue for a truly special Christmas market: "Advent in the Grüben".
The six-day Advent market, 1st and 2nd weekend in Advent, is atmospheric and serene. Despite not being a large-scale event, it is one of the enchanting winter highlights against the unique backdrop of Burghausen old town.

Castle Christmas

3rd Advent weekend

Alongside traditional items such as Christmas-tree decorations and crib figurines, special products made of wood, clay, leather, felt and lambskins are on sale, as well as jewellery. There are also plenty of tasty pre-Christmas treats.

Musical accompaniment is provided by Christmas songs and tunes, a "candle lighter" tells Christmas tales to the crowd, and the kids can hear stories told with shadow play. Concerts and a service of the Word are held in Elisabeth's Chapel.
